The Bike Lane

In 2001, The Bike Lane opened its doors for business. As it turned out, owners Todd and Anne Mader had no intention of being just another local bike shop hawking tune-ups and high-end components (though they do have great deals on both!).

Advocacy and Community Involvement

Anne and Todd recognized one simple fact during the early stages of The Bike Lane: the health of their business is directly correlated with the vibrancy of the local bicycle community. Consequently, the shop sponsors, participates in, and/or advocates for, just about every bicycle related organization, event, and initiative in northern Virginia (that's no exaggeration). The partial list includes:

To complement the shop's sponsorship generosity, The Bike Lane supports bicycle advocacy initiatives. From mountain bike trail advocacy (Anne has been on the MORE Board of Directors for eight years) to Safe Routes to School, which is gaining traction in Fairfax County, this bike shop preaches what it practices.

Promoting the Bicycle Lifestyle

As Anne Mader pronounces, "We don't just sell a bike. We sell a lifestyle." The Bike Lane's website, which has a wealth of information on bike buying, bicycle commuting, and race training regiments (to name a few), further illustrates that point. To keep in touch with The Bike Lane, "fan" them on Facebook. 1,887 fans and counting follow their almost-daily updates about events, advocacy, and, last but not least, bikes!

The Bike Lane is a success for many reasons but the biggest may just be their being an important part of the community (bicycling and otherwise). Thank you Anne and Todd.
