Montgomery Parks - Weed Warriors

Fighting on the front lines of Montgomery County's battle against invasive plants is an elite unit of environmental soldiers. The enemies - kudzu, wineberry, and oriental bittersweet to name a few - are well-rooted in the trenches, but our soldiers are making headway. Equipped with heavy artillery in the form of gardening gloves, loppers, and an exhaustive knowledge of invasive plants identification, this passionate group of battle-tested veterans are the County's best hope for the proliferation of biologically healthy forests.

Who are these brave men and women you ask? They are...the Weed Warriors.

In order to join the ranks of the Weed Warriors, the Montgomery County Natural Resources Stewardship team conducts online and field training sessions for interested volunteers. Following certification, warriors focus their efforts at a Montgomery County park of their liking. Certified Weed Warriors with a year of experience can be promoted to Supervisors and lead their own volunteer events. More than 500 citizens have enlisted since the program began in 1999, but many more are needed if victory is to be assured.

Dates for upcoming field training sessions, which take place in Wheaton Regional Park, include:

  • September 30, 2009
  • October 28, 2009

Volunteer

You don't need to be certified to join the battle. Volunteer opportunities for Special Project Weed Warriors, non-certified volunteers, are offered throughout the year. You'll have to wait until spring for the Garlic Mustard Challenge, but with National Public Lands Day, Community Service Day, and a host of ongoing projects, the Weed Warriors' fall schedule is locked and loaded.

Upcoming Events: National Public Lands Day

Unless this is your first encounter with Trail Voice, you already know that on September 26, 2009, National Public Lands Day is coming to a park near you. With six scheduled outdoor service events, five of which are hosted by certified Weed Warriors, Montgomery Parks is making a strong case for your sweat equity support. Join the Weed Warriors on the 26th of this month at any of the following locations:
