Logo for Invasive Plants Removal Day What started last year as a Fairfax County exclusive has now expanded across the Commonwealth. Sponsored by Virginia Master Naturalist and the Virginia Native Plant Society, Invasive Plant Removal Day, scheduled for this Saturday, May 2nd, is a state-wide effort to remove harmful invasive plants - notably, the garlic mustard plant. It is no coincidence that this year's date precedes the garlic mustard plant's production of seeds. The notorious white-flowered, long-stemmed beast is easy to spot and remove by hand. Opportunities to extract revenge on May 2nd are plentiful. Fairfax County Park Authority Invasive Management Area (IMA) Volunteer Program, the original mastermind of Invasive Plants Day, is hosting twelve sites and seeking about twenty volunteers at each location (locations include Huntley Meadows, Rocky Run Stream Valley, and Royal Lake to name a few). Not to be left out, Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church are in on the action, too.
