Earth Day 2010 in the Washington DC Area |
|
Earth Day turns 40 On Thursday, April 22nd, Earth Day celebrates its 40th birthday. Leave the gag gifts and "over the hill" jokes at home - this birthday party is more about alternative energy and reusable water bottles. The Washington DC area features a plethora of Earth Day events, both large (Climate Rally on the National Mall) and small ("City of Trees" presentation at Cleveland Park Library). Our colleagues, We Love DC, The Natural Capital, and About.com, have published comprehensive Earth Day event previews and we'll continue the trend by sharing some selected gems from Trail Voice friends. Service & Stewardship4/24 - Anacostia River Earth Day Cleanup: Trail Voice is spending Saturday morning caring for the "Forgotten River" by picking up trash at Fort Dupont Park (click here to sign-up). Fort Dupont, like many areas in the Anacostia River watershed, has a trash problem. Come out on Saturday to help us solve it. 4/22 - Lockhouse 8 Stewardship with the Potomac Conservancy: Break up your usual 9 to 5 routine by joining the Potomac Conservancy for a slate of service activities centered around Lockhouse 8 on the C&O Canal. 4/24 - Marumsco Acres Lake Clean-Up in Prince William County: The Trails & Streams Coalition, the Clean Community Council, and others are partnering to clean up this neighborhood lake just a short distance away from pristine Belmont Bay. Community Exhibitions & Celebrations4/22 - Vienna Green Expo [PDF]: Trail Voice is one of many exhibitors at the 2010 Green Expo in one of Northern Virginia's most walkable towns. The Sierra Club, Spokes Etc., and Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling (FABB) will be there as well. 4/24 - Cyclefest Expo 2010 in Reston Town Center: What could be more earth friendly than a bicycle? That's what this day-long festival, sponsored by The Bike Lane, celebrates. 4/25 - Touch the Earth Celebration at Potomac Overlook Regional Park [PDF]: A Trail Voice favorite, Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, is part of the team putting together this family-friendly event at Arlington's go-to nature park. Rallies & Media Events4/25 - Earth Day Climate Rally on the National Mall: As Sting and many other musicians wax poetic on the Earth Day stage, Trail Voice will be hanging out from 1-4 PM at the Sierra Club table. Stop by and wish us a "Happy Earth Day." 4/25 - Environmental Film Festival Bonus Screening: The Film Festival comes back to life with a special screening day at the Carnegie Institution for Science. 4/26 - Aveda Walk for Water on the National Mall: The Potomac Conservancy is the host/beneficiary of this clean water rally event on Monday - the perfect opportunity to wrap up your extended Earth Day weekend.
P.S.: At some point during the weekend, you might get hungry. |
