Thanksgiving 2009

Giving Thanks to the Outdoors

Welcome to the inaugural Trail Voice Thanksgiving edition. There's much to be thankful for if you're a Washington DC area outdoor enthusiast. In no particular order, Trail Voice would like to thank...

  1. Park Rangers roaming the trails at Catoctin Mountain Park

National Park Rangers: Obama's funding increase notwithstanding, Rangers don't exactly enjoy a life of luxury. It's their passion for public service and the outdoors that makes your national park experience what it is.
  2. Bicycle Advocacy Organizations: Organizations like WABA, FABB, and Rails-to-Trails are busy convincing local and national government leaders that DC can be a model for a bicycle-friendly city. I wouldn't bet against them.
  3. Chesapeake Bay Advocacy Organizations: Where would our treasured Bay be without the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Maryland Sierra Club, and many, many others in its corner? I don't want to know.
  4. MORE: For its tireless dedication to the sport of mountain biking. There's nothing that this group would rather be doing than lobbying for and building righteous singletrack. Except, perhaps, riding righteous singletrack.
  5. Last but not least, you, the readers of Trail Voice!

Thanksgiving Family Outings

C&O Canal Towpath
For a large, multi-generational family looking to walk off the turkey-coma, no DC area destination can match the C&O Canal Towpath. The pie-crust colored trail is flat, accessible, and much better looking than the Detroit Lions offense.

Matthew Henson Trail
Rockville/Aspen Hill residents eat more mashed potatoes than is medically recommended (no scientific evidence backs up this theory). If you're in this category, start the day off with a Matthew Henson Trail bike ride.

Potomac Heritage Trail
Thanksgiving is all about family. But to make it all about hiking instead, start at Chain Bridge or better yet, Turkey Run, and meander along the banks of our nation's river on the Potomac Heritage Trail.

Happy Thanksgiving!
